Chapter 5

“Okay, you’re not going to believe this, but he didn’t try very hard to hide his files,” Eric said about twenty minutes later. Merlin glanced up from his conversation on the phone, indicating that he should continue. “I’ve sent all the date into the Agency mainframe, but I’m also backing it up onto a disk. You know how trustworthy the Agency can be. I want to make sure people find out what’s really been going on here.”

“Really?” asked Merlin curiously as he hung up the phone. “Like what?”

“Like Ferris was behind everything that’s been going on almost since the Facilities were first formed, that’s what,” Eric said. He heard the computer beep and retrieved the disk. “But we don’t have time to discuss it right now. We need to get away from here right now.”

“I’ve just spoken with Raife,” Merlin said. “It seems her two new boyfriends have already dropped her off somewhere safe and they’re on the way to get us as well. Looks like they’re planning to fly us out. But we need to get outside so they can find us. I hope there’s still a transport outside or we’re going to have to run pretty fast to get to the exit.”

“No, if we’re not trying to drive, it’s not outward we need to go, it’s upward,” Eric pointed out.

“What do you mean?”

“Ferris has a secret exit that leads straight to the top of the mountain,” Eric explained. “But if we want them to see us up there, we made need to bring along some flares. And also, we’ll need to dress warm. The top of a mountain in late December isn’t going to be the warmest place we’ve ever been.”

“I’ll get back ahold of Raife and tell her where we’ve gone,” Merlin said then.

“Best do it at a run then,” said Eric. “We don’t have much time.”

Merlin did just as Eric suggested, testing Raife even as he followed him to the old coat closet where they found something to wear. They pulled on the coats and gloves, and then grabbed a couple bags of flares each. The younger man fell into step behind his uncle, and they entered a secret door and began to mount the tallest spiraling staircase Merlin had ever seen.

“How many steps do you think this thing has?” asked Merlin curiously as they continued upwards as quickly as possible.

“Nobody really knows,” Eric said. “They were carved by Ferris and his men just after this place was built. It took them about ten years of non-stop work to reach the surface. The original exit was only three thousand feet up, but the one we want now is at ten thousand. That isn’t the highest peak in the Yosemite mountains, but it’s as high as this one gets. Raife’s gods will already know to search over the Tuolumne Peak area, since that’s where we’ll emerge.”

“I still can’t believe they actually mean to do this,” said Merlin after a while. “I mean, what about all that
